CES pioneered the business coaching sector in Frederick, Maryland in 2000,, offering small business owners an economical alternative to corporate consultants.  Janet Morrissey, the founder of Canyon Executive Services, Inc, aimed to establish "the anytime of the consulting industry," where the knowledge of high-priced consultants could be reformulated into a system that could be provided at a comparatively low price by individuals trained in our methods. Janet observed that most small business owners are Technicians, individuals who acquired a technical skill while working for someone else—plumbers turning into plumbing contractors and lawyers starting their own legal practices, etc.—operating under a misguided belief: "If I grasp the technical aspects of my business, I then comprehend a business that performs that technical work.” She witnessed the alarming failure rate of small businesses during that period—50% within five years—as a direct consequence of most small business owners being ill-equipped to manage the demands of a business they were unready for: in leadership, marketing, finance, management, lead generation, lead conversion, and customer satisfaction.

Janet and her business partners, who have collaborated for over forty years, have been dedicated to assisting small business owners "work on their business rather than in it," aiming to develop systems that allow their businesses to function independently of them, rather than because of them. While many aspects have evolved since CES was founded, both within the company and in the wider world, CES's original vision of transforming small businesses globally, one small business owner at a time, continues to be upheld.
